Palace on Wheels Coaches Could Turn into Vintage Restaurants

Luxury travel may be boosted if the recent proposal of the Indian Railways to convert the old coaches of Palace on Wheels into "vintage coaches or hotels" turns into a reality.

Indian Railways' heritage wing, with the motive to provide passengers with opportunities to experience the ancient heritage while striking potential revenues, proposed to convert the ancient coaches of one of the leading luxury trains of India into vintage hotels and restaurants.

In this regard, a senior Railway Ministry official said, "We have sent the vintage hotel proposal to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) for consideration. Each vintage hotel will have two to three coaches and would cost an estimated Rs 16 crore".

At present, seven out of nine coaches of the Indian luxury train, Palace on Wheels, Rajasthan, are exhibited in the National Rail Museum. The museum comprises more than 100 exhibits, which include coaches used by the royal families for traveling, ancient photographs, antique furniture, and others.

The proposal expects to put up such restaurants at the selected stations or locations, which draw tourists. It also expects to put up these coaches-turned-vintage restaurants at strategic points, such as the Rewari Steam Locomotive Shed and Museum, which captivates locomotive enthusiasts.

According to sources, the Rajasthan tourism department planned to provide wedding packages on the popular luxury train, like Palace on Wheels, to encourage bookings. The plan also includes transferring guests to the luxurious weddings through these luxury trains.

Adding to the luxury trains’ updates, the luxury train Deccan Odyssey, which is operated by Cox & Kings, came up with a package last month that offered a 50 percent discount to Indian residents for their "companion on booking'' a cabin for the royal journeys to be taken between 02 Dec, 2017 to 12 May, 2018.
