Japan gifts 2 Shinkansen Trains to India for Mumbai Ahmedabad bullet train

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is India's first high-speed rail project and a representation of new infrastructure development. It will cut travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad and enhance connectivity between the two cities. The project represents India's increasing cooperation with Japan and its vision for "Make in India" in the railway domain.

Japan, as a token of goodwill, is donating two Shinkansen bullet trains to India. They are an E5 series and an E3 series train each, and these will be utilised for inspection and trial tests. These should reach India early in 2026. Through these trial tests, engineers can learn how to make the trains work under Indian conditions, such as heat and dust. Depending on this testing, upcoming bullet trains (such as the E10 series) can be produced in India itself.

Work on the construction of the project is going on in full swing. To date, 100 kilometers of viaducts and 250 kilometers of piers have been completed. Bridges on six rivers of Gujarat are also included in the development. Indian engineers are also being trained in Japan to understand the unique "slab track system" applied in Shinkansen railways, and training is done on 15 different courses to ensure knowledge transfer and skill enhancement.

The estimated cost of the bullet train project is ₹1.25 lakh crore. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is financing 88% of the cost. Up to now, JICA has already contributed approximately ₹59,396 crore. This does not only include financial assistance, but also technical assistance, design work, training programs, and expert services.

Indian Railways is also in the process of developing indigenous bullet trains. A ₹866.87 crore contract has been awarded to ICF (Integral Coach Factory) and BEML to construct high-speed trains that can run at 280 km/h. The Make in India trains are likely to be completed by 2026. They will have advanced features such as reclining seats, differently-abled facilities, and entertainment systems onboard.

When the project is done, travel duration between Ahmedabad and Mumbai will be cut to only 3 hours. It takes approximately 6 to 7 hours currently. This enormous time saving will make traveling more effective and also increase economic activity between the two cities.

1.  High Speed:

The E5 Shinkansen trains are capable of speeds up to 320 km/h. This would translate to just a 3-hour journey between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, in comparison to the road or regular train journey, which would take around 6-7 hours. 

2. Tested for Indian Conditions:

As the Indian climate is hot and dusty, the trains are also specially designed with fine mesh filters for dust and more powerful air-conditioning arrangements to accommodate Indian conditions.

3. Indigenous Manufacturing:

India is also attempting to develop bullet trains of their own with technical assistance from ICF and BEML. The locally developed trains will operate at 280 km/h and should be introduced by 2026.

4. Modern Passenger Comfort:

The trains will provide rotating and reclining seats, increased legroom, improved lighting, entertainment displays, and disabled passenger facilities.

5. Advanced Track System:

The Shinkansen's "slab track system" (J-slab) is being implemented in India for the first time. It is more stable and requires less maintenance than conventional tracks. 

6. Smart Signaling System:

Indian bullet trains will employ the ETCS (European Train Control System), but the Japanese bullet trains will be equipped with their native DS-ATC for control and security purposes.
