In a historic moment for Jammu and Kashmir, the Vande Bharat Express has finally started regular services between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. This is not just a new train service, it's a big step forward in connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India through a fast, reliable, and modern railway link.

The Northern Railway has confirmed that these new Vande Bharat Express trains will run six days a week (except Tuesdays), connecting the two important destinations: Srinagar, the heart of the Kashmir Valley, and Katra, home to the famous Vaishno Devi temple. Earlier, travelling this route by road took six to seven hours, often depending on weather and traffic conditions. Now, with the Vande Bharat train, the journey will take just three hours.

This is a major relief, not just for locals but also for tourists and pilgrims. Whether you are visiting Kashmir for its natural beauty or heading to Katra for religious reasons, your journey will now be faster, smoother, and more comfortable.

Two pairs of Vande Bharat trains are now running on the Srinagar-Katra-Srinagar route. Their train numbers are 26401/26402 and 26403/26404. Both trains stop at Banihal, a crucial junction between the Jammu and Kashmir regions.

These trains are not the regular ones. They have been specially designed for the extreme weather of the Himalayas. That means they can operate even during harsh winters, snowfall, and low temperatures, when many other transport modes fail.

Running a train in the Kashmir Valley is no easy job. Heavy snow, freezing temperatures, and tough terrain can make travel difficult. But these Vande Bharat trains come with advanced features like: - Heated windshields

  • Defrosting systems
  • Thermally insulated toilets
  • Onboard heating systems

This train service became possible after the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). This 272-km-long railway line took years to build and cost nearly Rs 44,000 crore. The line includes 36 tunnels and over 900 bridges, including the world-famous Chenab Bridge.

At a height of 359 meters above the river, the Chenab Bridge is now the world's highest railway arch bridge - even taller than the Eiffel Tower! This bridge alone is a sign of India's engineering power and shows how far we've come in building infrastructure even in the toughest locations.
