A Father who is the head of the family is an unsung hero in our lives! He sacrifices all his dreams, wants and desires just to fulfill the wishes of his children, helping them grow in a better way. Every day is Father’s Day as no one can become a better person without the guidance of his or her father. Still, to honor such selfless heroes around the world, Father's Day is being observed.

It was in the early 20th century that the celebration of Father's Day was started in the United States. This event signifies fatherhood and their influence in society. Most of the countries observe Father’s Day on third Sunday in the month of June. Many countries celebrate Father’s Day on some other days as well.

Establishment

Anna Jarvis established the celebration of Mother's Day in the month of May in order to honor her dead mother in Grafton (West Virginia), a town located at a distance of 24 km from Fairmont. Being inspired from Anna Jarvis' work, Grace Golden Clayton started observing Father's Day from July 5, 1908, in Fairmont (West Virginia). The first celebration was held in the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, which is at present known as Central United Methodist Church.

Grace Golden Clayton was a quiet person and she never promoted the event. She even did not talk to others about it. Still the event became popular throughout the town and later throughout the world.

Father's Day Celebration in India

The idea of celebrating Father's Day in India is as old as less than a decade. The concept has been imported from the western country -US. This remarkable observation of Father’s Day to honor and to show gratitude to the fathers has been accepted and appreciated in India, to a great extent.

Indians celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June as the people of US and UK do. The Indians celebrate it in a limited way as there’s less awareness about the festival among the Indians.

Due to exposure to western culture, people living in big towns and metropolitan cities celebrate this festival more than the people living in rural areas or smaller towns within the country. The advertising campaigns run by the gift sellers and card companies are responsible in spreading the awareness of Father's Day celebration in small cities and towns within India.

In India, various cultural programs are organized by many schools and cultural societies on Father's Day, inspiring the children to pay respect to their dad. Such programs also inspire Fathers to spend happy moments and quality time with their children, and also to teach them noble values and good manners.

Gifting Daddy

In India also, people celebrate Father's Day by expressing their love and gratitude to their Daddy. Gifting daddy is a gesture, a simple way to make him feel special, as throughout his life he has only given without any expectation.

On this day, children gift their dad with flowers, cards and other gift items to show their affection and care. Children also take their dad out for dinner in some of the finest restaurants of the city, they plan out a picnic or go for a movie. These are some of the most common ways of celebrating this special day in India.
